Lot 2081 VERNEY CARRON DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH

CASE. Cal. .475 No. 2 Nitro Express. S# 4404 (1929). The 25-5/8" chopper lump barrels are fitted with matted quarter rib holding one standing two folding leaf express rear sight and matching front ramp holding gold bead. Tops of barrels are engraved "Verney Carron -Liege-" on right and ".475 No 2 Nitro Express Cordite 85 Grains, 480 Grains" on left. Barrel flats are stamped with 1929 Belgian nitro proofs for rifle and with steel type; caliber designation is on bottoms of barrels. Coin finished boxlock action features non-automatic safety on top strap which has extension over top of comb; pivoting third fastener, bushed strikers, reinforced action frame and double triggers (front articulated). Action is engraved with some feather borders around screws. Maker's name and address are on left side and "VC" logo is on top lever pivot. S# is on trigger guard tang. Nicely fiddle figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over Silver type pad. Stock features small right hand cheekpiece, point pattern checkering on semi-diamond hand and silver oval on toeline with a family crest. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is housed in vintage leather case embossed "A.C." "2" on top which is lined in burgundy cloth. 2 leather labels are in lid; 1 for Gastine Renette the other, much newer, for Verny Carron. Case contains: three piece wood and brass cleaning rod, tin of vaseline, another tin of ? and Vintage Doubles tag. CONDITION: good as refurbished. Barrels retaining nearly all of a good quality re-black. Action shows heavy cleaning to silver gray; engraving is considerably softened. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with some subsequent marks. Checkering is moderately worn. Bores are good; heavily frosted with strong rifling. Action is tight; barrels are on face. Mechanically good. Case is fine. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth has rubs through and light soiling. Accessories are good. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6351/MGM).
